Jackson Street Commons
In May of 2014, Family Service Association of Howard County Inc. (FSA) opened the doors to “Jackson Street Commons” permanent, supportive housing for chronically homeless veterans. Jackson Street Commons uses the National “Housing First Model” which is an approach that centers on providing homeless people, veterans in this case, with housing. This model provides a home first and then surrounds the veterans with services that will help with their stabilization. Jackson Street Commons is only the third of its kind for the State of Indiana.Jackson Street Commons, a $3.6 million project, received the majority of its funding through a $2.5 million grant from IHCDA (Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority ) as well as $500,000 from Federal Home Loan Bank. To help with the remaining cost, Jackson Street Commons has been a joint effort with partners such as the City of Kokomo, Howard County Commissioners, Center Township Trustee, St. Joseph / St. Vincent Hospital, VFW Post 1152 and several other businesses as well as private donors. Thanks to the generosity of our local partners FSA was able to build JSC debt free. However, there are operating and staffing expenses incurred on a monthly basis and ongoing financial support of Jackson Street Commons is critical to effectively support the needs of these veterans.
